Back in 1907, Charles Glass entered his first competition with his beer, which went on to win gold. Glass’ beginnings goes a bit farther back, however. Born in Kent, Charles travelled to South Africa and started producing his own lagers in 1884. It quickly gained popularity among the miners in Johannesburg at the time. Following the increase in popularity, Charles decides to open his brewery and named it Castle Brewery.
