South African Foods That Pair Well with Cider

7th November 2025

Cider is a classic summer beverage and one that typically pairs well with meat. It’s particularly popular in South Africa, where Savanna Dry is a richly celebrated favourite for a light, thirst-quenching drink at many a braai. This means that many classic South African dishes pair wonderfully with a bottle of cider and as we prepare for a summer of grilling and feasting, we thought we would share a selection of favourites.

  1. Boerie Rolls: The rich, spiced flavours of boerewors combined with the traditional tomato and onion topping are complemented by the crisp, refreshing taste of cider. The acidity in cider can cut through the fattiness of the sausage, enhancing the overall flavour experience. Here are some boerie roll recipes you must try!

  2. Droëwors: This dried sausage, similar to boerewors but cured, pairs well with cider due to its concentrated flavours. The sweetness and effervescence of cider can balance the savoury and slightly spicy notes of droëwors. Our chilli chutney droëwors pair especially well, giving that little kick to balance the sweetness of the cider. For the cold weather months, pair droewors with our range of refreshing wines. Check out our pairing guide here.

  3. Biltong: Biltong is a snacking classic for a reason. Biltong’s savoury and sometimes spicy profile is nicely offset by the sweetness and acidity of cider. This pairing can highlight the umami flavours in the meat while refreshing the palate and makes for a great option during a night in. Biltong also goes deliciously well with a nice bottle of wine. For some great combinations, check out our wine and biltong pairing guide.

  4. Bobotie: One of the most popular dishes in South Africa, this curried meat dish with a custard topping offers a complex flavour profile. A semi-dry cider can compliment the sweet and savoury elements of bobotie, enhancing the spices without overwhelming them. Try out our traditional bobotie recipe. We also stock classic Royco sauce packets if you fancy a light and breezy option.

  5. Cape Malay Curry: The aromatic spices and slight sweetness of Cape Malay curries can be beautifully balanced by a crisp dry cider, which can cleanse the palate between bites and accentuate the dish’s flavours. Try out our traditional Cape Malay curry recipe.

Cider is the perfect compliment to a braai or a game night and the bite of a Savanna Dry makes it a thirst-quenching favourite both back in South Africa and here in the UK. Check out our range of Savanna and Hunter’s cider and find your perfect combination to start your summer off right!
